'No one in danger' from apparent cracks in Willis Tower Skydeck Ledge

Visible cracks in the Skydeck Ledge made for a scary moment for visitors to the Chicago attraction.

CHICAGO (WTHR) - A visible crack in the glass on the Willis Tower Skydeck Ledge is apparently nothing to worry about.

It was, nonetheless, a scary moment for visitors to the Chicago attraction.

"I hear a noise like 'ksh ksh ksh' and it cracked," said Jesus Pintado, enjoing a family sight-seeing trip. "A woman with two little kids and they looked like pale because the whole glass is cracked."

Pintado, who got married last weekend, took his new wife and family to the ledge, which is some 1,350 feet above the ground. Visitors can peer down through glass balconies.

"I think something fell from the ceiling because I saw like a little metallic piece, like a square, and it was in the middle of the crack of the glass," he said.

Pintado's wife, already a vertigo sufferer, wanted no part of it.

"That was intimidating enough for me so, when that happened I was like 'nope. I'm not doing it,'" said Karly Pintado.

The deck closed once back in 2014 after cracks first appeared in a scratch-prevention coating.

"The protective coating which acts like a screen protector for the Ledge experienced some minor cracking. No one was ever in danger and the Ledge was immediately closed. We replaced the coating last night and the Ledge is open for business as usual," read a statement from a Willis spokesperson.

"I know it's safe but I'm just very scared of heights," Karly said.

We're told the protective pieces are replaced once or twice a year to provide visitors with the best viewing experience.

The cause of the cracks isn't known.
