A large sinkhole developed on Yerba Buena Road north of Yellow Hill, swallowing an excavator along with its operator. The operator was safely rescued.

VENTURA, Calif (NBC) — A giant sinkhole in southern California swallowed a large construction vehicle while it was excavating debris from the road yesterday afternoon.

Ventura county authorities said the massive sinkhole opened up in the aftermath of torrential rain in the area.

An excavator fell into the hole as a result.

Officials said the vehicle's operator was rescued safely.

As for the road, it is expected to be impassible for an unknown period of time.
