Dozens step in to help after 93-year-old veteran loses $16,000 to contractor

Renovations to Ralph Ellis' bathroom are going to be finished soon.

AUSTIN, Texas (WTHR) - Strangers are coming together on Veterans Day to help a World War II veteran from Texas who supporters say was scammed out of thousands of dollars.

According to KVUE, Ralph Ellis paid nearly $16,000 to a contractor to make his bathroom safer and handicapped-accessible, but the work was never done.

Now, people from several organizations are coming together to do the work themselves.

And that's not all.

On Monday, Honor Flight flew the 93-year-old to Washington D.C. to see the memorials.

"Oh it's great, yeah fine, wonderful," Ellis said.

There are more than 38,000 veterans on the Honor Flight waiting list.

The renovations to Ellis' bathroom are going to be finished soon.
