NORTH MANCHESTER, England (WTHR) - A dog is recovering from injuries inflicted by burglars who stole her puppies after hitting her with a machete.

According to Greater Manchester Police in the UK, two men entered a residence in North Manchester on July 20, armed with machetes, which they used to attack the man inside. After they left him on the floor to search for valuables, the suspects came across a litter of five-week-old puppies and began shoving them into their bags.

The puppies' mother, Zena, tried to defend her pups, but was hit in the head with a machete wielded by one of the men. She suffered a deep laceration, but is recovering.

After sending out a plea to get the puppies home, police reported the six pups were found within a day and reunited with Zena, who was "over the moon at their return."

The department shared an adorable photo of the puppies back together and safe, taking a much-needed nap.

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of burglary in the case, in which the thieves also stole cash, keys and a phone from the human victim.
