JEFFERSON COUNTY, Co. (WTHR) — A little boy in Colorado decided to "give back" with his birthday, and while some kids would want a "super-hero" themed birthday party, 3-year-old Henry Heckenberg had a blood-drive to celebrate his big day.
That's because Henry spent his second birthday in the hospital. He was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder and would have died without transfusions. So, this year his family brought in a blood-drive truck so Henry's guests could donate while they celebrate. His mom says it's a unique opportunity.
"Sometimes when you give blood you're kind of faceless and nameless and you don't know the family that you're supporting," she said. "For us, you can put a face and name to us."
While it was the parents who were the ones donating blood at the party, the kids Henry's age got to do some face painting. They also got to check out one of his "favorite things"- a school bus!
