Norfolk, Virginia - A military jury in Norfolk, Virginia is sending a sailor to life in prison without parole for killing a Marine from Indianapolis.

Petty Officer Third Class Cooper Jackson pleaded guilty Monday to killing Corporal Justin Huff in January. The plea was part of a deal that spared him the death penalty.

Jackson has said he mistakenly believed Huff had participated in a gang rape.

Investigators said Jackson had been dumped by a woman who called herself "Samantha."

The woman had told Jackson a made-up a story about being raped by several service members.
Jackson said during his court-martial that he posed as a special agent to frighten Huff into giving him information about the purported rape.

He said he decided he had to kill Huff to avoid being caught for impersonating a Naval Criminal Investigative Service agent.
