INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Indiana teachers are calling on Senator Todd Young to recuse himself from a vote on one of President Donald Trump's cabinet picks.
Thursday, the teachers held a group held a sit-in at his office.
Sources say the family of Secretary of Education nominee Betsy DeVos gave Young more than $48,000 last year. Teachers say it's a conflict of interest.
The committee on which Young sits is slated to vote on DeVos' nomination next Tuesday. His staff tells Eyewitness News he will not recuse himself from that vote.
"Why would she pay so much, with so much desire to have this job if she were unqualified for it?" said a teacher at the sit-in. "We have her own words stating the reason she has made these large donations is because she wants this job."
Young's staff also pointed out that other senators have received donations from cabinet picks in the past. That includes Senator Joe Donnelly (D-Indiana).
Eyewitness News has confirmed Donnelly’s campaign committee received $5,000 in contributions from Penny Pritzker. In June 2013, she was confirmed as Secretary of Commerce with overwhelming bipartisan support, by a vote of 97-1.
