Lawmakers pass bill to wait on teacher evaluations based on ILEARN results

After Gov. Holcomb's signature on the bill, schools will not be held accountable for poor performance on ILEARN from the past two school years.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The Indiana General Assembly has passed Senate Bill 2, which means schools will not be held accountable for poor performance on ILEARN scores from the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.

The bill now heads to Gov. Eric Holcomb's desk. He's expected to sign it.

It's one of the things thousands of teachers and supporters were asking for during last year's Red for Ed rally. At the time, the Indiana State Teachers Association said standardized tests like ILEARN don't reflect the work both students and teachers put in.

Teachers asked for more time for educators and students to get more comfortable with the new testing before the state could use the scores to evaluate them. Last year, only about one-third of students who took ILEARN passed both the critical math and English Language Arts sections of the exam.

The signing of SB 2 will mean schools can only use ILEARN results as part of a teacher's annual performance evaluation if they would improve the teacher's rating.
