EL PASO, Texas (WTHR) - Beto O'Rourke is running for president, NBC affiliate KTSM confirmed Wednesday.

The former congressman from El Paso is expected to formally announce his candidacy Thursday, but confirmed the decision in a text message to KTSM on Wednesday.

"I'm really proud of what El Paso did and what El Paso represents," O'Rourke said in the text. "It's a big part of why I'm running. This city is the best example of this country at its best."

O'Rourke joins a field of Democratic candidates that already includes Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) and Julian Castro, among others. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has formed an exploratory committee about a possible run at the Democratic nomination for president, as well.
