KY governor signs bill into law allowing concealed carry without permit

Governor Matt Bevin has signed a bill to change gun laws in Kentucky.

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTHR) — Governor Matt Bevin has signed a bill to change gun laws in Kentucky.

NBC affiliate WAVE 3 News reported Bevin signed the NRA-backed measure into law on Monday.

The new law allows anyone 21 and older to carry a concealed weapon without a permit in Kentucky.

The law goes into effect this summer.

Supporters say it reinforces the state's constitutional rights to bear arms, but opponents voiced concerns about safety and lack of training.

People can still get a concealed carry permit after it goes into effect in July, but it won't be mandatory. However, Kentuckians who travel to other states and want to conceal carry will need that permit.

Kentucky is now the 16th state in the nation to allow for conceal carry without a permit.
