Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are now the longest-married presidential couple

ATLANTA (WTHR) — The Carters have hit a milestone: they are the longest married presidential couple.

The Carter Center posted on Facebook that Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have been married 73 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Former president Carter was just 21 years old when he married Rosalynn. She was 18, 11Alive reported.

According to the post, Rosalynn rejected Carter's first proposal.

“She promised her father, on his deathbed, to finish college & would not marry until then," the post reads.

The couple celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary on July 8, 2019.
