Astronaut Wolf says proposed 'Space Force' is key to exploration, innovation

The Trump administration has announced plans to add a sixth branch to the U.S. military to protect American satellites in space.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The Trump administration has announced plans to add a sixth branch to the U.S. military to protect American satellites in space.

We're getting reaction from former NASA astronaut David Wolf.

His resume includes 168 days in space, four missions and seven spacewalks.

He says he is excited about what the "Space Force" can mean not only for exploration but for innovation as well.

"We have grown out beyond Earth and there are natural treasure assets in space. Our daily lives depend on it. 70 years have gone by since we started a new service and the world has changed a great deal. I think it's time to protect those assets and I don't mean just for this country but the whole world so the whole system continues to work correctly," Wolf said.

Wolf said it's been 70 years since we started a new service and the world has changed a great deal.

"There is a renewed synergy and elimination of duplication that will save billions while still enabling increased human exploration along with the national security aspects which are primarily defense, of course there has to be a offensive element as needed, but there is a protective system of space assets. there is no intent to go to war with anybody."
