4 dead on Florida-bound cruise ship, more than 100 others are ill

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WTHR) — Four passengers have died while on board a criuse ship headed to Florida.

More than 100 others are sick.

The cruise liner, Holland America Line, confirmed to WESH that four older guests have died on Zaandam. It's unclear if their deaths are coronavirus-related.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and we are doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time,” a statement from the cruiseliner read.

The ship was granted permission to leave Punta Arenas, Chile but that permission was later rescinded, WESH reported.

There are 53 guests and 85 crew members who have reported to the ship's medical center with flu-like symptoms. WESH reported, there are 1,243 guests and 586 crew on board.

A number of people with respiratory symptoms had been tested for COVID-19, two of which have tested positive.
