Indianapolis, Sept. 13 (AP) - Lieutenant Governor Joe Kernan is expected to be sworn in as governor of Indiana today, following the death of Frank O'Bannon.

The 57-year-old Kernan graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1968 with a degree and government.

His wife, Maggie, is a vice president of First Source Bank. They have homes in South Bend and Indianapolis. They have no children.

Kernan flew as a navigator on 26 combat missions over Laos and North Vietnam.

He was shot down over North Vietnam and held as a prisoner of war for nearly 11 months.

He was elected mayor of South Bend in 1987 and held the post for nine years, longer than any other person.
