The rush follows the newly released Coconut Oil Diet, and press like last week's Women's World magazine promises an underground, high metabolism secret inside, lose 10 pounds in seven days.
The coconut diet, in a nutshell, is two to three tablespoons of coconut oil and limit your carbs to 30 grams a day.
Brad Harper has "been using coconut oil now for about 2 and one-half months since I've been training for the mini and I've lost about 18 pounds."
Intensity is the key word, and technique.
Personal trainer John Powers starting using coconut oil in his competition days to sustain high energy. "I'm a huge believer."
Coconut oil is a natural, highly saturated fat, traditionally a nutritionist's no-no. St. Vincent Registered Dietitian Margie Bryan says, "Well, let's take a look inside this coconut oil and as you can see it does not pour out, and that is a feature of a saturated fat. It's very solid at room temperature and you can only wonder, what does this do to your arteries and veins?"
Coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride, or MCT, which breaks down rapidly.
That is a known fact. However, whether or not that means that it increases the way your body burns other calories has not been totally proven at this point.
Consider that three tablespoons totals 360 calories.
If you were to walk at a rate of two miles per hour it would take you nearly one hour and 45 minutes to burn off.
So if you are adding coconut oil calories, make sure you are subtracting others or increasing your workout enough to burn the fat off.
