Woman critical after escaping and then re-entering burning home

Firefighters were called to the 1400 block of Lynn Drive East when neighbors reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the house.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - A woman was hospitalized Friday after she apparently escaped and then re-entered a burning home.

Firefighters were called to the 1400 block of Lynn Drive East when neighbors reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the house.

Dispatchers were also told that someone might be trapped inside.

Witnesses told investigators they saw smoke coming from the house and ran help. They found the woman in a backyard, covered in soot. The witnesses said they left when the woman said she "had it under control." For reasons unknown, the woman then re-entered the burning home.

First responders quickly located the victim. She was unconscious. IFD said the victim, 24, later regained consciousness and is in critical condition at a hospital.

Damage to the home is estimated at $50,000. The cause is under investigation.
