Xcel working to restore natural gas service in Superior, Louisville

Xcel is providing electric heaters to affected customers in the area of the fire.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Xcel Energy is working to restore natural gas service to thousands of customers taken offline due to the Marshall Fire in Boulder County.

Xcel said Sunday that they have restored natural gas service to about 1,800 of the 13,000 customers in Superior and Louisville who were without service. They expect that most customers who are able to receive service will be restored by the end of the day Tuesday.

Xcel said customers do not need to call the utility to schedule relights of pilot lights. Once service is restored in an area, crews go door to door to relight pilot lights, after confirming the customer’s meter is working properly. Crews will knock on doors to do relights between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Xcel said an adult 18 or over needs to be home for crews to do the relights. If no one is home, they will leave a door tag asking the customer to call for a relight.

Xcel said the repair and restoration work has been divided into nine regions. Because damage to the system varies by region, some areas will be restored earlier than others. Customers can find updates for each region on Xcel's website.

The Boulder Office of Emergency Management said the town of Superior is shutting off water in the burn areas to restore water pressure and prevent pipes from freezing.

Electric service

Xcel said about 1,000 customers in the fire area remain without power. The company said they are working directly with these customers, as some of the structures are not able to accept power.

Outside of the fire zone, about 600 customers remain without power as of Sunday. Xcel expects those outages to be restored by the end of the day.

Space heaters

Xcel is providing electric heaters to affected customers in Superior and Louisville. To pick up an electric heater, stop by one of these locations between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday:

  • YMCA at 2800 Dagny Way in Lafayette
  • Superior Community Center at 1500 Coalton Road

There will be a large tent located onsite with electric heaters available.
