What you need to know about spring cleaning

It's easy this week to '"Think Spring," and you may be in the mood to do some deep cleaning. But, how do you make sure you're getting what you pay for when it comes to your carpets and floors?

It's easy to think Spring with the nice weather we've had lately, but a good cleaning can make it feel like Spring inside your home.

Experts recommend carpets, rugs and floors be professionally cleaned about once a year.

It's not just about ridding your home of allergens and dirt, but an annual clean is needed to maintain the warranty on wall-to-wall carpeting.

There are a lot of options, but Jordan King with Sani Bright in Indianapolis says it is best not to dry clean a carpet because "a lot more of those compounds can have residue in the carpet."

He says the best way to clean carpets is a steam clean.

"It leaves the least amount of residue and gets the most soil out of the carpets," he said.

Jordan also suggests area rugs be sent out to be cleaned, because it is a controlled process and can handle the variety of dyes.

Whatever carpet cleaner you choose, make sure they are certified.

Heating and air ducts are another area that need attention every two to five years.

Cleaning out the ducts also helps eliminate dust and allergens and helps maintain high efficiency furnaces.

But, be leery of the flyer deals that claim to clean out the vents for $49.

Clay Winters with Mite-E Ducts says the process takes about three to five hours to complete, and asks, "Do you really think they're going to spend three to five hours in your home for $49?"

Winters says that in the end, those deals can cost thousands of dollars.

He suggests getting a quote up front, and even asking for before and after photos of the work.

You should also check for certification and licensing of air duct cleaning companies.

The average cost of this kind of job is $400 to $600, depending on the size of the home.
