INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Dozens of volunteers are taking a head count of Indianapolis' homeless population.
The volunteers are going to shelters, transitional housing, and encampments as part of the annual "point-in-time count."
The city will use the results of the count to apply for federal funding, which helps provide better services to the people who need it.
Mayor Joe Hogsett says it wouldn't be possible without the 22 teams of volunteers.
"They're giving up an entire evening to help our community help those most in need," he said. "I don't think a nicer thing can be done for the betterment of Indianapolis than what these volunteers will be doing tonight."
Volunteers gave each person counted a kit with food, Socks, and gloves.
The city will publish the results of tonight's count later this year.
