Summer events offering a chance for fun and normalcy

From walks in the garden to movies and concerts, summer fun is returning...safely.

INDIANAPOLIS — Some of summer's favorite events, that we kind of took for granted, are coming back.

This weekend is a chance for families to catch their breath and escape from the pandemic crisis, at least for a little while.

The Garden at Newfields reopened to people waiting in line. There's flowers, trees and lots of room. It was a perfect escape for the Marcuson family celebrating Imogen's 2nd birthday.

"There is space to get out. Nature if you can't get it necessarily in other parts of the community," said Jason Marcuson. "It's beautiful weather. It's perfect right now."

Newfield's closed three months ago. The reopening is a big step toward the new normal.

"This is an amazing happy day. We are so excited to be here for the community, our state and provide them a safe place to be," said chief operating officer Katie Haigh.

Social distancing is the rule and while face masks are recommended outside, they are required inside.

Admission is $18 and tickets can be purchased online.

Across town in Garfield Park, the big screen is coming for a family Friday movie night.

Unlike previous movies and concerts, this will be a drive-in. Families park where directed, and hopefully stay in their cars to watch "The Lion King" Friday night. It's free, no-frills entertainment.

"We are not doing the normal types of concessions. We have some Porta Johns unfortunately around." explained George Venn of Indy Parks. "But at least we can get people in the park. They see a movie, and they leave applauding what we attempted to do."

Saturday night, country music star Garth Brooks hits the big drive-in movie screens.
