INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Some Lawrence Township students got a lesson in how to be a detective Tuesday.

Skiles Test STEM Elementary School set up a crime scene in the woods behind the school. It was pretty realistic, with crime scene tape, shotgun shells and the search for victims in the form of dead animals.

The students used real forensic tools and techniques to collect evidence. Then they worked together to analyze their findings, applying science skills to real life in a fun, hands-on way.

"We're going to document everything, photograph, write things down, measure things. Write down who collected it all," said teacher Dave Shafer. "Because later on, we may be able to lift fingerprints, we're going to test water from the creek to see if it's possible pollution that's causing these animals to die."

"I like it because we get to go outside and explore things and we get to learn what police do in a crime scene," said student Kyra Barlow.

The school received a matching grant through the Science Everywhere challenge to help pay for the project, which is part of their science class. The Science Everywhere challenge is designed to encourage outside-class math and science learning.
