SOUTHPORT, Ind. (WTHR) – A Center Grove High School student raised more than $20,000 for the family of a Southport student killed in a car accident.

Rashawn Haskins died December 1 in a crash in Greenwood. Haskins was a star running back for the Southport football team.

When Ben Nicoson heard about the tragedy, he wanted to do something to help Haskins’ family, who was struggling financially leading up to the accident.

“It just really touched my heart, feeling the Haskins family’s need and comfort,” said Nicoson.

The Center Grove senior starting collecting donations from other high school sports team’s across Indiana. Hoping for each team to donate a dollar for each player on the team.

Nicoson’s fundraiser ended up reaching $22,208.92. He presented the check to the Haskins family Saturday.

“That he even had this in heart, especially a young guy anyway, to think of something like this to do for somebody a total stranger he didn’t even know. I appreciate him and his family and his heart,” said Rashawn’s father Lonnie Haskins.
