State police investigating officer-involved shooting in Muncie

Muncie officers were called out on a suicidal person overnight, and ended up shooting and killing them.

MUNCIE, Ind. —

Indiana State Police are investigating an overnight police-involved shooting in Muncie that left a person dead.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, Muncie officers were called to investigate a report of a suicidal person. After about 20 minutes, the person was located in an alley near 14th Street and S. High Street.

Investigators say when Muncie officers arrived in the area to check on the possible suicidal person, they found a man sitting in a car under a car port in an alley behind a residence.

As officers approached, the man got out of the car and pointed a handgun at an officer, according to investigators.

The man, identified as 30-year-old Taylor Christian Warner of Muncie, refused to follow officer’s verbal commands to drop the gun and continued pointing it at an officer.

The officers fired their weapons, wounding Warner. He was taken to the hospital and died a short time later, according to a statement from ISP.

Later in the morning ISP investigators were able to examine the gun used by Warner and learned it was a handgun replica-style BB gun. Investigators say the BB gun did not have any orange pieces on it or any other indicators that it was not a real firearm. Warner was also armed with a large blade butcher-style kitchen knife.

The details of this incident are still under investigation.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative duty.

Indiana State Police Detectives are being assisted by the Muncie Police Department and the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office.
