Suspect found dead inside south side convenience store after shooting, fire

Metro police are not sure what prompted the man to start shooting and set the fire.

INDIANAPOLIS — Metro police say a man killed himself after he shot up and set fire to a Southport Road convenience store Friday night.

Police say the man entered the Marathon station on Southport Road near Bluff Road around 11 p.m., fired shots and then barricaded himself inside.

He then set fire to the gas station.

After the fire was out, SWAT officers found the man dead inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No customers or employees were harmed.

According to a police spokesperson at the scene, the man was armed with a rifle.

The fire was extinguished using streams of water aimed by firefighters "working a safe distance" from the building, according to IMPD.

Police who first arrived at the incident didn't know if the suspect was still inside the building and called SWAT officers to assist.

Police are still investigating.
