Retired Army General to mark anniversary of 'largest American battle of WWII' in Belgium

This will be his fifth trip to Belgium.

FISHERS, Ind. (WTHR) - He was just a kid when World War II broke out, but now an 85-year-old Vietnam veteran is getting the chance to commemorate a special anniversary in the war.

Retired Brigadier General Don Canaday will travel to Bastogne, Belgium next month to mark the anniversary of The Battle of the Bulge.

The battle started nine days before Christmas, lasted more than a month and saw 89,000 American casualties, the largest battle American forces fought in World War II.

Canaday spent 28 years in the Army and served in the Vietnam War. He was part of the 101st Airborne Division which was also part of The Battle of the Bulge.

This will be his fifth trip to Belgium.

"I think just and how I've been treated when I went there. They love Americans. You can't believe how well they treat you and respect you and it makes you feel good," said Canaday.

Canaday is a past president of Kiwanis International, headquartered in Indianapolis.
