Movement to legalize medical marijuana gains momentum after town hall

Nearly 100 lawmakers, veterans and local citizens showed up in support of legalizing medical marijuana.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — The movement to legalize medical marijuana in Indiana took on new momentum Saturday after lawmakers, veterans and local citizens gathered for a cannabis town hall downtown.

Nearly 100 people showed up for the town all at the Indiana State Library.

Republican State Rep. Jim Lucas is a vocal supporter of legalizing medical marijuana.

"I want to decriminalize cannabis in the state of Indiana," said Lucas. "That's my ultimate goal. I'll just come out and say it. Medically, recreationally, there's no reason that Hoosier adults can't be trusted to enjoy something responsibly that dozens of other states are doing across the nation and is significantly safer than alcohol, of which the state is promoting."

Lucas recently went to Colorado to learn about that state's experience. He's still in the minority of supporters among Indiana lawmakers, which is frustrating to people who believe in the medical benefits of marijuana.

"With the polls showing that nearly 75 percent of our citizens...support medical cannabis...Where's that representation within our state?" asked veteran Jeff Staker.

Staker also pointed out the vast support for medical marijuana use among veterans.

"It's up to the people to be that voice to get it through our legislative system," Staker said.

Currently, 30 states and Washington, D.C. have laws that legalize marijuana to some extent.
