INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indianapolis Power and Light says its received increased reports of payment scams.

The power company said it has received growing reports about people posing as IPL representatives, trying to scam them out of money.

Customers say they have received unsolicited calls and emails from people saying their service is at risk of being disconnected. Then the scammers ask them to give payment immediately.

IPL says to call 317-261-8222 to verify if someone from the company contacted you about a bill. If you are unsure whether you are being targeted, IPL has these reminders:

  • IPL doesn't require or recommend a specific payment option.
  • If an IPL representative does contact you, they will have specific knowledge about your account.
  • Never give personal information unless you are confident it is a legitimate IPL employee.

If you believe you've been the victim of one of these scams, call the local police department's nonemergency number. For IMPD, number is 311.
