Indianapolis couple's tale of kindness and a special pizza delivery goes viral

A Michigan pizza shop made an extra special delivery for an Indianapolis couple and the tale is going viral.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A Michigan pizza shop made an extra special delivery for an Indianapolis couple and the tale is going viral.

Julie Morgan wrote on Facebook that she and her husband Rich had planned a weekend getaway to Michigan, including a trip to their former home of Battle Creek, and dinner at Steve's Pizza, a favorite spot in Battle Creek.

"We were young and money was tight but every pay day, Rich would pick up Steve's Pizza for dinner," Julie wrote. "I can't possibly describe how delicious this pizza is - but several moves and all these years later, it is still the gold standard and we've never found a better pizza yet."

But before the couple made it back "home" to Steve's, Rich ended up in the ICU, where they learned "his valiant cancer battle was coming to an end," Julie wrote.

As Rich spent days at home enjoying visiting with friends and sharing memories, Julie's father worked on a special surprise. He called Steve's Pizza, expecting a note or a card with well wishes from the Morgans' favorite pizza spot.

Instead, the delivery they received was even more special.

A store manager named Dalton Shaffer not only got the couple's address, but he took an order for their pizzas and made the 3 1/2-hour drive south to Indianapolis. He arrived at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, visited briefly with family members at the Morgan home and made the drive home to get to work the next day.

"I am beyond overwhelmed and humbled by this act of genuine kindness. Dalton brought our family so much joy - and the best pizza in the world - at a really difficult time," Julie's post continued. "While "thank you" hardly seems adequate - from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Dalton from Steve's Pizza in Battle Creek, MI for making your epic middle of the night pizza delivery!"

Shaffer told MLive.com he didn't make the delivery for attention and was surprised to find that Julie shared the story on Facebook, where it has been shared thousands of times since she wrote it Tuesday evening. Morgan's father said the manager was "delightful" and that "he has his heart in the right place."

The Morgans said the pizza was just as delicious as they remembered, even though they had to wait until they woke up Sunday to grab a bite.

To top the whole story off? Steve's doesn't normally deliver, even to their local customers.
