GREENSBURG (WTHR) - Switzlerand County High School football player Colton Schirmer is recovering at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis after his coach says he suffered a broken neck in Friday night's game against North Decatur.

Coach Ryan Jesop says Schirmer was injured during a kickoff return and fractured his C4 and C5 vertebrae. Jesop says those fractures also led to a contusion that is putting pressure on his spinal cord, resulting in a loss of feeling in his extremities.

“He’s progressing better and it’s not life threatening or anything like that, but it is something that definitely shakes you to the core when you see it," Jesop told the Madison County Courier after the game.

Schirmer was taken by medical helicopter to Riley Hospital.

Coach Jesop has started a GoFundMe page, where they hope to raise $5,000 for Schirmer and his family. Jesop says a second GoFundMe has also been started by the North Decatur community and their team.
