Northern Indiana man identified after deadly police shooting

A Porter County man is dead after police responded to a call to assist a suicidal subject Wednesday evening.

SOUTH HAVEN, Ind. (WTHR) — A Porter County man is dead after police responded to a call to assist a suicidal subject Wednesday evening.

That man has been identified as 46-year-old Kevin Vawter.

Indiana State Police is investigating after a Porter County Sheriff's officer shot and killed a Vawter in a home on McCool Road in South Haven.

Police say the Porter County Sheriff's Office got a call to assist a suicidal subject just after 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw a bloody man through one of the home's windows.

Officers entered the home and police say the man went after one of the officers, who then tased him. A second officer tried to put handcuffs on the man, but the man lunged at that officer with a knife. That's when one of the officers shot the man.

They immediately began life-saving efforts, but were unable to revive him. Medics transported the man to a Valparaiso hospital and he later died.

Police say the initial 911 call came from a family member who had been beaten by the man before making the call.

State police continue to investigate the case. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over the the Porter County Prosecutor's Office.
