Indiana inmates walk to raise money for Riley Hospital

Inmates at a western Indiana prison raised $7,000 for Riley Kids over the weekend.

ROCKVILLE, Ind. (WTHR) - Inmates at a western Indiana prison raised $7,000 for Riley Kids over the weekend.

The Indiana Department of Correction said 354 offenders at the Rockville Correctional Facility took part in the Televerde Riley Walk at the prison Saturday, walking for two hours to raise money and awareness for the Riley Cheer Guild at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

It was the fifth year for the walk, which allows offenders a chance to take part in giving back to the community. The inmates have raised over $34,000 in the five years the walk has taken place.

Inmates took part in the walk with a donation as little as $5, while others donated more for a chance to purchase baskets that contained health and hygiene products, snacks, candy or coffee for their use.

The Televerde Corporation and Indiana Correctional Industries partner to operate a call center that provides services for software companies who are searching for corporate clients. The center, in turn, provides offenders with job and life skills they can use when they are released from prison.

The Riley Cheer Guild provides a toy room, music therapy and art center programs that enhance the experience of patients and caregivers staying at Riley Hospital.

"There are 150 children hospitalized at Riley right now who appreciate your hard work, your donation, and your thoughts," Ann Hanah with Riley Hospital told the inmates as she accepted the donation.
