Former Whitko High School resource officer charged with failure to report rape

State Police investigated a claim in February that a 16-year-old girl told Matthew D. Gilbert she had been raped, but he failed to investigate.

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) - A former officer with the South Whitley Police Department, who also worked as the a school resource Officer at Whitko High School, was arrested and charged with failing to report a rape.

State Police investigated a claim in February that a 16-year-old girl told Matthew D. Gilbert she had been raped earlier in the year.

Gilbert, 34, was informed of the alleged rape at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year but failed to investigate or follow up on the report.

Gilbert was arrested Friday and the Whitley County Prosecutor's Office charged him with Failure to Report a Rape or Sexual Assault, which is a Class B Misdemeanor.

He is scheduled to appear in court today after posting bond.
