2 people killed in crash involving Amish buggy, van

The Parke County Sheriff's Department is investigating after two people died in a crash involving an Amish buggy and a van.

PARKE COUNTY, Ind. (WTHR) – The Parke County Sheriff's Department is investigating after two people died in a crash involving an Amish buggy and a van.

Authorities say the crash happened on U.S. 36 near the Raccoon Lake bridge just before 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

During the investigation, officials learned that a family of four was traveling in the buggy when a 2019 Ford van driven by 66-year-old Steve Miller Ealy of Danville struck the buggy from the rear end and forced the buggy off the roadway.

One person from the buggy was pronounced dead at the scene and three others were taken to Indianapolis and Clay County hospitals, according to the Parke County sheriff.

A second victim has since died as a result of the crash.

Family members Abraham, 24, and Kathryn Detweiler, 5 months old, were both released from hospitals Sunday.

The driver of the van was not injured. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash.

A veterinarian cared for the horse at the scene.
