Indiana man's unusual career centers around 'grizzly' relationship

Jeff Watson works with grizzly bears.

FRENCH LICK, Ind. (WTHR) — At 55 years of age, Jeff Watson has carved out a relatively unusual career.

"I've done Marlboro commercials for Germany, Energizer Battery, Rice Krispie Treats, Walker Texas Ranger," he said.

He didn't do them alone.

"Couldn't let Chuck Norris around the bear because we all know Chuck would hurt him," Watson joked.

This Bedford native has become a legend of sorts.

That's because he works with grizzly bears.

Bob weighs in around 800 pounds while his brother Screech is 700 pounds.

"Screech. He just wouldn't shut up as a cub," Watson said.

Over the years, they've had a unique career. Beyond the commercials there were also television shows: "Porter Ridge" and "Project Grizzly."

Watson said he didn't have any aspirations to be on TV when all this started. He just wanted to hang out with the bears.

"I'm just going to hang out like Grizzly Adams did, but what they didn't tell me when I watched Grizzly Adams was that is how he died. They left that part out," Watson said with a chuckle.

The three have now settled into some new digs at Wilstem Ranch in French Lick.

"Jeff has a feeling for bears unlike anyone on earth. He is recognized around the earth," Wilstem Park owner Jerry Fuhs said.

They are now starring in the live action "Grizzly Encounter."

"It's a huge enclosure that gives them the space they need. It's a natural setting that works for them and for the public viewing them," Fuhs said.

"I hope to retire from here. I don't like travel. This is what I have always really wanted. Just to hang out with my bears," Watson admitted.
