Logansport, Ind. - Logansport residents who fail to get a permit before holding a garage sale could see their profits land in the city's hands.
The city is cracking down on those who violate a 30-year-old ordinance requiring permits for garage sales and restricting where signs advertising the sales can be placed.
A dozen violators were hauled before the city's Board of Works & Public Safety recently. All got off with a $10 fine for holding sales without permits and a stern warning that posting signs illegally could cost them up to $300 in the future.
Deputy Mayor Linda Klinck says the signs can become an eyesore because people don't remove them after the sale. They also can pose a safety hazard.
The city has issued 576 garage sale permits so far this year.
