IACS launching 'cuddle before you commit' program

The "Cuddle Before You Commit" program will let you to foster a dog or cat for two weeks before the adoption.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Indianapolis Animal Care Services is launching a new program to try and find more animals a new home.

The "Cuddle Before You Commit" program will let you to foster a dog or cat for two weeks before the adoption.

“Sometimes it’s hard to know how an animal will respond in a new home after spending weeks in the stressful environment of the shelter,” said Katie Trennepohl, Deputy Director of IACS. “During this two-week period, the Cuddle Foster will be able to see if the animal they’ve chosen is a good fit for their home and family.”

On Day 15, if the animal has not been returned, or a return appointment made, the adoption application will be processed and the Cuddle Foster will become the owner of the animal.

“Even if the adoption doesn’t work out, IACS is still benefiting because we’re able to get information about how the animal does in a home,” said Laura Keith, Kennel Manager. “The more information we have about an animal, the quicker we can find it a new home and free up much needed kennel and cage space.”

Even if you decide not to adopt, you can choose to continue fostering the animal until the right adopter is found.

There are other ways you can help as well:

  • Sign up to be a volunteer and help us care for all of the animals. Jobs range from dog walking, enrichment, kennel and cage cleaning, and much more. For more information, click here.
  • Donate supplies we use on a daily basis. The shelter does have a supply budget, but when we are overcrowded, supplies tend to run out quickly. Items we are in need of on a regular basis include bleach, paper towels, cat and kitten food (wet and dry), dog food (wet and dry), and cat litter (pine and clay). • Share our story. The more people that hear about the shelter and all of the wonderful animals available for adoptions, the more chances these sweet dogs and cats will find their furever homes. IACS can be found on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
