High-pitch warning device helping students feel safer on campus

College students across the country are getting a new tool to help protect them on campus.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - College students across the country are getting a new tool to help protect them on campus.

The device is called the ROBOCOPP.

It looks like a flash drive, but when you pull off the top, it makes an extremely loud beeping sound at 120 decibels - the equivalent of an ambulance siren.

Students at IUPUI say it gives them extra peace of mind, especially when walking at night or in parking garages.

"I feel like it's safer than using a weapon like pepper spray or anything smaller, because I feel like it's easy to use and I know how to use it," said IUPUI sophomore Josie Salyer.

Campus safety experts say anything that calls attention to a situation can buy valuable time in either startling the attacker and scaring them off, or spooking them enough to give their target a chance to run away.

The Robocopp is for sale on Amazon.com and costs less than $20.
