A Fishers teen received an 80-year prison sentence Friday for committing what the judge called "one of the worst murders."

Max Winkler kept his head down and wouldn't look at the victim's family as they read statements in court.

Family and friends were at the sentencing hearing Friday, including Max Winkler's parents, who whispered to their son in court, "I love you."

Prosecutors say Winkler planned to murder someone in 2014, and even had handwritten notes and ended up picking his victim at random. That victim was Henry Kim - out for a walk in Windermere Park.

Investigators say Winkler plotted a so-called "thrill kill" and picked a victim at random. Winkler had a gun and knife. He shot Kim three times and slit his throat.

Winkler pleaded guilty but mentally ill. He was deemed competent to stand trial.

"He had a detailed scheme written out in a notebook and he in essence very closely carried out the plan," said Lee Buckingham, Hamilton County prosecutor.

"No matter how long he stay[s] in jail, it doesn't bring Henry back," said Charles Chae, Kim's friend.

"Henry did nothing to deserve this. I hope [Winkler's] actions will haunt him forever," said Sue Kim, the victim's widow.

"Dad's murder took so much. Our worlds have been shattered," said Scott Kim, the victim's son.

Prosecutors say with good behavior, Winkler will get out of prison in his mid-seventies.
