Council approves plan to put panhandlers to work

The City-County Council unanimously approved a measure Monday night that would put panhandlers to work.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The City-County Council unanimously approved a measure Monday night that would put panhandlers to work.

The proposal allows the Office of Public Health and Safety to hire people off the streets to clean up the city. The jobs would include picking up trash, planting flowers and removing graffiti.

Workers could earn between $9-11 an hour.

The $300,000 for the program will come from parking meter fees. It could be up and running as early as this spring.
