Combine, B1G Championship make big sports weekend in Indy

Big sports weekends always mean a big economic impact on the city.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Expect to see lots of new faces around downtown Indianapolis this weekend, including posing for pictures at the Big Ten sign around Monument Circle.

Two huge college sports events in town this weekend means some 80,000 visitors from across the country are in town.

The NFL Combine goes through Sunday at the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium with some 330 college athletes hoping to turn impress NFL coaches enough to land a spot on a team.

The Big Ten Women's Basketball tournament also continues at Bankers Life Fieldhouse through Sunday.

IU is the one Indiana college represented at both, as Indiana takes on Maryland at 6:30 Friday evening in women’s basketball. The school also has five NFL hopefuls (Simmie Cobbs, Chris Covington, Rashard Fant, Tegray Scales and Ian Thomas) in the Combine.

Notre Dame has also has five football players (Josh Adams, Mike McGlinchey, Quenton Nelson, Durham Smythe and Equanimeous St. Brown) participating, with Purdue (Eddy Wilson) and Ball State (Anthony Winbush) each with one.

The Combine will generate a $10 million economic impact and will continue to be an annual event Indianapolis through at least 2020.

The Big Ten weekend will bring about $5 million to the city.

While more people will be out around downtown, hotels are filling up fast.

Friday morning, a room at the Conrad downtown would go for $342 for Friday night; a week later the same room would go for $195, according to the hotel’s website.

The Combine is also hosting a NFL Combine Experience. Will can get a chance to see athletes up close and personal with special experiences:

  • View NFL Talks: Combine Edition panel discussions featuring special guests
  • Participate in photo opportunities with the Vince Lombardi Trophy and Super Bowl rings

  • Receive free autographs from NFL legends at the Combine Experience Autograph Stage presented by Panini
  • Shop for favorite NFL and 2018 NFL Scouting Combine gear at the NFL shop
