BROWNSBURG, Ind. (WTHR) — For the last 45 years, Mike and Linda Hilligoss have dedicated their time to bringing Brownsburg delicious donuts from their family-owned bakery.
In 1974, the young couple wanted to open a liquor store, they opened a bakery as a way to make money for the liquor store endeavor. Mike taught himself how to bake donuts, cookies and cakes for the business. To this day, he wakes up at 1:30 a.m. every weekday to make donuts from scratch.
Since the store's 1974 opening, the Hilligosses estimate they've baked more than 21.5 million handmade donuts, and of course, that doesn't include the cookies, brownies, Danish or dinner rolls they've baked.
Now, 45 years later, the couple is celebrating the notable milestone with the community.
Customers can buy a dozen donuts for $5.40 today, a big discount on the typical $8.49 price. Classic yeast donuts — a favorite for customers — are just 45 cents each.
That's a pretty good deal for anyone with a sweet tooth like Mike's. He said his family has to cut him off after eating six donuts.
Mike credits the public and a strong family presence for keeping Hilligoss Bakery running this long.
There have been seven generations of his family of people involved in the family business — from his great-grandmother, Gertrude, to his grandsons. Mike's son Phillip, who grew up around the bakery, now runs the business and the social media.
The bakery recommends putting order in to secure your donuts and give them an idea of how much they'll need to make. Call the store at 317-852-7451. Hilligoss Bakery is located in Brownsburg at 804 E. Main St.
