Avon food pantry in dire need of donations as Fall Break nears

The Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry says their shelves are almost completely empty right now.

AVON, Ind. (WTHR) - A food pantry in Avon is in desperate need of help.

The Mary Lee Maier Community Pantry says their shelves are almost completely empty right now. The shortage comes as a critical time, with many students going on Fall Break next week and needing food, since it can be difficult for them to get food at home.

Now they are asking for donations to help re-stock their shelves. They're looking for items like cereal, granola bars, canned goods, kid-friendly snacks and personal hygiene products.

To help fill the need, Chef Suzanne Rockwell is accepting donations at her Fishers kitchen. She reached out to her friends and clients of Chef Suzanne Catering, asking them to drop off canned goods to donate.

She'll collect donations through 2 p.m. Thursday, then deliver it all to the food pantry in Avon.

"I often say we don't have a lot of cash in the bank, but by God we've got food, and so we should get it into the hands and mouths of the people who need it," Rockwell said. "When children have full bellies and they come to their safe place which is typically their schools, they're going to perform better, they're going to pay more attention, they're going to listen better to their teachers, and they're going to feel better."

Chef Suzanne Catering is located at 9623 Windermere Boulevard Suite C in Fishers, or you can bring your donations directly to the food pantry, which is located inside Maple Elementary School in Avon.
