9-year-old who died in Muncie fire was home alone, fire investigator says

The Delaware County coroner has confirmed a 9-year-old boy died in a fire in Muncie early Thursday morning.

MUNCIE, Ind. (WTHR) — The Delaware County coroner has confirmed a 9-year-old boy died in a fire in Muncie early Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to the fire on South Walnut Street around 3:45 a.m.

According to Robert Mead, chief fire investigator with the Muncie Fire Department, the fire began in the home's kitchen.

The 9-year-old victim was home alone at the time of the fire, according Chief Mead. The victim has been identified as Vincent Gibbons.

After a woman arrived at the home and told firefighters her child had been inside, crews eventually found the boy's body in a loft area in the home.

The home is near the intersection of 29th and Walnut streets.

According to officials, it appears there were no working smoke detectors in the home.
