MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — A central Indiana school board has approved a nearly $600,000 contract for emergency repairs to one of the nation's largest high school basketball venues.

A severe thunderstorm toppled part of the Muncie Fieldhouse's brick facade last November, damaging its roof and water pipes that released a deluge that damaged the Muncie gymnasium's hardwood basketball court.

The Muncie Community School Board authorized emergency repairs in August and on Tuesday it approved a $580,000 contract with an Indianapolis company that will repair the roof and the facade.

The Star Press reports school officials hope the gymnasium can reopen in December, but they haven't yet obtained competitive bids to replace the basketball court.

The gym opened in 1928 and seats about 6,000 spectators in the city about 35 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
