500 Festival Memorial Service recognizes those who made ultimate sacrifice

A military flyover above the War Memorial was one of the highlights.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Friday's 500 Festival Memorial Service is the city's opportunity to recognize those who've made the ultimate sacrifice.

A military flyover above the War Memorial was one of the highlights.

A Marine who served in the Battle of Iwa Jima spoke at the program. Hershel "Woody" Williams wants more attention for gold star families, those who've lost a loved one in military service.

"If you can join me in any way to encourage more recognition, more honor, more tribute to those who gave more than any of us, please add your support," he said.

Williams is the sole surviving Marine from World War II to wear the Medal of Honor.
