INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Good morning. Here are five things you need to know today:
1) A man is in critical condition after an overnight shooting, and a second man is in custody as a person of interest. The shooting happened just southwest of downtown in the 1300 block of Sheffield Avenue. Police aren't revealing much about their investigation at this point, but do say the two men know each other.
2) An Indianapolis pastor has plans to improve their security and safety after a burglar preyed on their church. Pastor Andrew Horton says someone broke into Southside Missionary Baptist Church on E. Sumner Ave. sometime between Sunday morning service and Wednesday night Bible class. He thinks they broke through one of the windows near the handicap ramp. Horton suspects the burglar, who also ransacked the basement, was on a mission to find cash. They don't leave cash on the property, but that didn't keep the suspect from searching almost every nook and cranny during the break-in.
3) Roncalli principal Chuck Weisenbach says signs removed from the school were not in support of suspended counselor Shelly Fitzgerald. He said they were political signs advocating "Pride Day," and the school doesn't allow political advocacy "regardless of the cause or political position." Students are allowed to wear rainbow attire and accessories in school and to school sporting events, but during Friday's home football game, students will not be allowed to bring signs, posters, flags or banners. Fitzgerald has been suspended for about a month since school leadership and the archdiocese learned about her same-sex marriage.
4) President Donald Trump touted jobs and economic growth during a rally at Evansville's Ford Center last night, plus gave a plug for Mike Braun's Senate campaign. Protesters gathered outside the venue. Some were Democrats there to support incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly, and others were workers who have been laid off or are about to be who were there to protest Trump's economic record.
5) This is the unofficial last weekend of summer as we head into the big Labor Day holiday. Don't be fooled, though: Chuck Lofton says summer will continue for at least another week with above average heat and humidity. Our forecast today includes a mix of sun and clouds, with afternoon temperatures in the lower and middle 80s. There is a slight chance for a pop-up shower or storm, but most of the area will be dry. This will be the case for most of the holiday weekend too. Tonight for Operation Football, temps will be near 80 at kickoff.
