INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - Good morning. Here are five things you need to know today:
1) Two teens were shot overnight on I-65 at Southport Road. State Police investigators found the victims - a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old - were in separate vehicles. Both were taken to Eskenazi for treatment, but are expected to survive. The 16-year-old had a passenger who wasn't hurt. Investigators believe someone shot at both victims from a third car - a dark or dark-colored car, possibly a Nissan with a large rust spot on the back that was last seen driving westbound on Southport.
2) The Roncalli High School counselor who was put on paid leave when her same-sex marriage was made public, now plans to sue the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for discrimination. Shelly Fitzgerald announced that would be her next legal move as she undertakes her new mission as an advocate for change in the Catholic Church. Specifically, she wants employment contracts like her own to no longer have a ban against same-sex marriage and add benefits to same-sex spouses. Fitzgerald remains on administrative leave from Roncalli, but attorney says he sees no way she could ever return. He says negotiations have come to a close as Fitzgerald plans to file a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
3) Due to an ongoing salmonella outbreak, Jennie-O has recalled 91,000 pounds of raw ground turkey products. The items were shipped to retailers nationwide. According to recall information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 164 patients in 35 states are being investigated to help get to the bottom of the outbreak. The Food Safety and Inspection Service said a big concern is turkey that may in freezers. If you find the turkey in your refrigerator or freezer, return it to the place of purchase.
4) A judge is expected to announce at a hearing this morning whether he will order the Trump administration to return the White House press credentials of CNN's Jim Acosta. CNN has asked U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly, an appointee of President Donald Trump, for an order that would force the White House to immediately hand back the credentials that give Acosta, CNN's chief White House correspondent, access to the White House complex for press briefings and other events. CNN wants Acosta's credentials restored while a lawsuit over his credentials' revocation goes forward.
5) Today will be mostly cloudy and chilly with afternoon temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Chuck Lofton says it will be cold and dry for Operation Football tonight as the road to Indy and the IHSAA state championships continue. We are tracking another developing weather system for later Saturday into Sunday. It will bring another round of rain and snow showers, and maybe a wintry mix will be waiting for fans as they head into Lucas Oil Stadium for the Colts game.
