19th annual Back to School Family Day gives local kids free school supplies, health screenings

Saturday is the 19th annual Back to School Family Day where kids will be to get school supplies and most importantly, get health screenings.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) – Saturday is the 19th annual Back to School Family Day where kids will be to get school supplies and most importantly, get health screenings.

Covering Kids and Families of Health and Hospital held Saturday's event at the Marion County Public Health Department.

Kids of all ages received backpacks filled with supplies and could get a free physical and immunizations.

They also worked to get kids health insurance.

"It's a wellness day - it's a family day. Look we have something for everybody, for the kids, for the grandkids, for the parents so it's fun and everything is free today," said Pamela Humes of Covering Kids and Families of Health and Hospital.

The fire department held a safety fest to teach kids about fire safety.

"Back to School Family day has been going on for 19 years and they have really connected with the community so this was the perfect opportunity for the fire department to come alongside and give safety messages to our community," said Captain Aleatha Henderson, Director of Public Education for IFD.

The Indianapolis Fire Department also handed out bike helmets to the kids in attendance.

All of this comes as summer break quickly comes to an end.

"We want kids to be ready on that first day," said Humes.

A lot of school districts in our area are going back to school on August 1, which is just days away.
