ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (WTHR / KRQE) —Alzheimer's is a destructive disease that has no cure at this point.
However, researchers at the University of New Mexico tell KRQE they may have found a way to prevent it.
"I really wanted to take this as a challenge to see if we could develop any sort of treatment," Kiran Bhaskar told KRQE.
Bhaskar said his team has been working on this since they came up with an idea in 2013.
He said they have tested the vaccine on mice and saw signs of success.
The vaccine works by targeting a specific protein that's commonly found in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's.
The team is now working to get it approved to test on people and that could take a couple years still. It would then need FDA approval if it works and that could take additional years.
