State confirms 1,750 new cases, 5 additional deaths

The Indiana State Department of Health confirmed 1,750 additional cases of COVID-19 Sunday, and 5 additional deaths from the virus.

A total of 9,598 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, with another 376 probable deaths in patients with symptoms of the virus for whom no positive test is on record.

Protesters shut down Dodger Stadium vaccine site

The Los Angeles Times reports that one of the largest vaccination sites in the nation temporarily shut down Saturday because dozen of protesters blocked the entrance, stalling hundreds of motorists who had been waiting in line for hours.

Officials say the Los Angeles Fire Department shut the entrance to the vaccination center at Dodger Stadium about 2 p.m. as a precaution. The protesters included members of anti-vaccine and far-right groups.

Some of them carried signs decrying the COVID-19 vaccine and shouting for people not to get the shots. There were no incidents of violence.

The real number of people infected by the virus around the world is believed to be much higher — perhaps 10 times higher in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — given testing limitations and the many mild cases that have gone unreported or unrecognized.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness like pneumonia, or death.

WHO team visits Wuhan food market in search of virus clues

A World Health Organization team looking into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic has visited the food market in the Chinese city of Wuhan that was linked to many early infections. The team members visited the Huanan Seafood Market for about an hour Sunday afternoon.

The market was the site of a December 2019 outbreak of the virus. Scientists initially suspected the virus came from wild animals sold in the market. The market has since been largely ruled out but it could provide hints to how the virus spread so widely.

The WHO mission has become politically charged, as China seeks to avoid blame for alleged missteps in its early response to the outbreak.
